Darren interviewed on ABC's ON THE RED CARPET
Posted on November 6th, 2010

There’s a fresh face coming to the FOX hit Glee, in the form of the young 20-something Darren Criss.

The star stopped by our On The Red Carpet studios to dish on his role as Blaine, an openly gay member of a rival glee club.

“Its just a bonus that its actually a very cool and interesting role, an actors dream and sort of politlically what it stands for,” Criss told us. “This is a guy that is really empowered and strong through who he is and what he’s all about. So I really hope that fact is a source of positive energy for any kind of youth dealing with any kind of issue.”

“This is the biggest bonus about this character. Even if it wasnt Glee, if it wasnt a major network its so great to see such a strong gay youth character,” he said.

Criss also addressed rumors that he’ll be a love interest for the Kurt on the show, played by Chris Colfer.

“Im more interested in Blaine being a friend and a mentor to Kurt and for the first time having someone in the exact same situation as Kurt,” he said. “At this point in the show most of Kurt’s friensdhips are not as easily relatable as Blaine will be, so thats the coolest part. So we'll see what happens from there.”

Catch Darren Criss’ debut on Glee, November 9th on FOX.

Darren,
As odd as it sounds, I feel like a proud mother watching your rise to success.
You are immensely talented, and it was a pleasure meeting you this past summer.
I hope you continue to be as down-to-earth as you were when i met you- we love you for your genuineness (is that a word?)!
Keep it up!

congratz on GLEE. Loved the episode. I'm sure you know what a great thing these characters and story arcs will be for LGBT kids out there. But I just want to say thanks. I wish more of them had someone telling them "courage." Thanks for taking the role!

I really enjoyed watching this last episode of Glee. I think it sent a strong message to those in similar situations. (Plus watching Darren Criss sing and dance is no hardship either ;)
